The funeral for Walter Schlenker, 85, Wishek, ND will be Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, ND. Visitation will be Friday, January 1, 2010 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, ND. Walter died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, ND.
Walter Schlenker son of Dan and Ella (Kusler) Schlenker was born February 8, 1924 at Wishek, ND. Walter grew to manhood in Wishek and attended Wishek Public Schools. He started working at Schlenker Garage at the age of 13. Walter married Bernice Kopplin June 23, 1946 at the Lehr Baptist Church, Lehr, ND. Walter became a master mechanic and was shop foreman for 25 years. Walter joined the Wishek Volunteer Fire Department in 1942 and served 21 years. He also served on the Wishek city council Board for 8 years and served as Director of the Association of Commerce for 5 years. One of Walter's pet projects was the annual Sauerkraut Day celebration. Walter was known as Mr. Fix-It in south central North Dakota. In 1963 Walter accepted employment as the plant engineer at the Wishek Community Hospital. Walter was a Charter EMT member of the Wishek Ambulance service and served on the ambulance squad. Walter was a long time member of St. Luke Lutheran church at Wishek, ND.
Walter died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, ND. He was 85 years old.
Walter is survived by his wife Bernice, Wishek, ND; daughter, Vernell (Jerry) Lehr, Fargo, ND; two sons, Steve (Beth) Schlenker, Sheridan, WY; Robert (Kimberly) Schlenker, Bozeman, MT; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Milbert Schlenker, Lake Wood, WA; Daniel (Dorothy) Schlenker, St. Peter, MN; two sisters, Meta (Shorty) Heiser, Mesa, AZ and Donna (Paul) Gall, Ashley, ND. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Arnold.
