Violet Meidinger, 93, of Wishek ND passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck after a short illness.

Violet Ketterling was born November 29, 1930 to Edwin A and Martha (Sayler) Ketterling at Wishek. She attended grade school and Wishek High School.  When she started school, she spoke no English.  In her early teens to earn spending money, she did house cleaning for various people in town.  She was in charge of bringing the cows into town from a nearby pasture for milking and taking them back when done.  During summer months she worked on different farms doing farm chores and milking cows.

On August 1, 1948, Violet married Arthur J Meidinger. They lived on the family homestead until 1955 when they built a new home 1 mile west. They were blessed with four daughters – Janice, Carol, Lois and Marsha.  They enjoyed going to polka dances and she continued to listen to Polka Party on Sunday afternoons. They loved to play pinochle.  They raised their own beef and chickens and grew a large vegetable garden.  Besides regular chores, she made meals for the threshers and workers at their home. She learned to bake bread – 6 loaves at a time.  She helped haul bales and picked lots of rocks on the cropland where she found her petrified rock collection. She milked cows so always had milk and cream on hand and made homemade butter by shaking cream in a gallon pail. The butter was a treat with her homemade bread. Violet sewed many square block quilts that were stitched by hand. All the girls and grandchildren received one, and she made sure she had loaves of bread on hand to give them when  they visited. Violet was Sunday School Superintendent at New Kassel Church for many years.  They moved into Wishek in 2010. Art passed away on February 9, 2013.

Survivors include her children: Janice (Lyle) Reiner, Carol (Bruce Cariveau) Snyder, Lois Gad and Marsha (Terry) Rath; grandchildren Jason (Kellie) Reiner, Greg (Heather) Reiner, Scott Snyder, Mindy (Dan) Graulty, Patrick (Karley) Rath; great grandchildren Kyra, Marissa and Lauren Reiner; brothers Marvin (Avis) Ketterling, Willard (Shirley) Ketterling, sisters Darlene Weldele and Donna Held.

She was preceded in death by her husband Art, parents, and brothers Clarence, Floyd and Robert Ketterling.

Special thank you to the Wishek Hospital and St. Alexius Hospital for the care she received. Your compassion was greatly appreciated.
