Obituary

Steve Engelhardt, 72, of Napoleon, ND, died January 21, 2022 at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 29 th at 10:30 AM at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon. Visitation will be held Friday, January 28 th from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. Burial will be held at a later date. Steve was born March 26, 1949 in Bismarck, ND to Mike and Mary (Meier) Engelhardt. He attended school in Napoleon, graduating from Napoleon High School in 1968. After graduation he worked for Neigum Construction (Elmer Neigum) from 1968 to 1972. He went on to graduate from the Law Enforcement Academy in 1973. Since 1972 Steve took to public service as he was appointed Napoleon Chief of Police and served from 1972 to 1978. In October 1978 he accepted a position as a Logan County Deputy Sheriff and served until 1986 when he was elected Sheriff of Logan County and served in that capacity until 2014. From 2014-2015 he stayed with the Sheriff's Dept. as a department deputy before retiring.

Steve was also the Logan County 911 coordinator from 1992 to 2007 where he was in charge of addressing all of Logan County and assigning emergency responders to each residence. He was also the county coroner for many years. He served as the Logan County Emergency Manager for 27 years, from 1980-2007.

In 1975 Steve was recognized by the American Legion with a Certificate of Commendation, and in 2014 he was awarded the North Dakota Highway Patrol Colonels Award for Excellence. He was also chosen as the honored Napoleon High School Alumni of the Year for 2019.

Steve was a member of the Bismarck Eagles Club and in his retirement years Steve enjoyed golfing and deer hunting with family and friends and volunteered at the Napoleon Care Center when needed.

Steve is survived by his siblings, Larry (Maria) Engelhardt, MI, Diane Vetter, Bismarck, Michael Engelhardt (special friend Sharon Pike), MI, Jerry (Mary) Engelhardt, Napoleon, Kenny (Brenda) Engelhardt, Napoleon, Karen Lang (special friend Kirk Freadhoff), Dawson and Keith Engelhardt, Las Vegas, NV; sister-in-law, Ruth Engelhardt, MT; numerous nieces and nephews as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael, John (Sharon) and Clinton (Leila and Donna); brothers-in-law, Kenny Vetter and Wayne Lang; nephew, Marlon  Engelhardt; nieces, Denise Vetter, Andrea Lang and Tammy Lang.
