The funeral service for Rose (Leier) Reis, 89, of rural Kintyre, will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, ND. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 4, 2019 from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, ND. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Rose was born on October 18, 1929, to Carl and Mary (Schatz) Leier, at their home farm in Logan County.  She was the sixth of 10 children.  While growing up, Rose helped with the many chores of farm life and attended country grade school southwest of Napoleon.  She and her family were devout Catholics and members of St. Boniface Parish southwest of Napoleon.

Rose married Peter Reis on June 25, 1952, and they settled on a family farm 9 miles southwest of Napoleon where they raised their son and daughter.  Rose was a devoted and hard-working wife and mother who cooked three meals a day using the produce from her garden and who saw to it that the milking and farm chores were done while Pete and son, Bob, were in the field tending to the crops.

Rose and her family were members of St. Boniface church where she was a member of the Christian Mothers and sang with the church choir; she raised all of the gladiola and peony flowers that decorated the alters of the church.  Rose was also very active in her children's school activities and was a Band Mother member helping to raise money for school band instruments and uniforms.

Rose was a devoted daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and cousin to her large extended family.  She loved to visit family, friends and neighbors.  She was among a vanishing generation of women who grew, canned and raised most of the food that her family needed.  She sewed, embroidered, loved music and enjoyed dancing the waltz and two-step.  She was known to be a superb cook but she is most well-known for her baking skills, especially her wedding and celebration cakes.  She was entirely self-taught from the baking of the cakes to the techniques for decorating.  Over the course of 40+ years, Rose baked about 500 wedding cakes that were enjoyed in locations as far as 200 miles from her kitchen.

Rose passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 28th, at the Napoleon Care Center in Napoleon. She was 89 years old.

Rose is survived by her husband of 66 years, Pete; a daughter, Brenda Reis (Clifford) Frasch, Philadelphia, PA; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Reis, Grand Forks, ND; two grandsons, Robert L. Reis II (Henry Hawley) and Travis J. Reis (Grace Kim), Minneapolis, MN; a great grandson, Landon V. Reis, Minneapolis; five brothers and sisters-in-law: Joe and Barbara Leier, Braddock, ND, Al Leier, Linton; Chris and Viola Leier, Linton; Tony and Alvera Leier, Kintyre; Carl & Jolene Leier, Columbus, OH; six sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lorraine Reis, Napoleon, Barbara and Victor Wald, Napoleon, Alvera and Tony Leier, Kintyre, Caroline Schatz, Kettle River, MN, Angeline and Ed Geiger, Bismarck, John Schweitzer, Harvey; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mary Leier, her son, Robert Reis, a brother, Andrew Leier, her sister, Margaret Meier, infant twin siblings, Sebastian & Mary, who died shortly after their birth, five sisters-in-law, Eva Huber, Clara Schweitzer, Madge Leier, Theresa Dutt, Helen Wickenheiser; six brothers-in-law, Pius Reis, Jr., Sebastian Reis, Pete Wickenheiser, Tony Huber, Karl Schatz and Jack Dutt.

We thank the many people of this community who always found time to visit Rose during her time at the Napoleon Care Center, and a special thank you to the Napoleon Care Center staff for their many years of exceptional and compassionate care-giving.  We also thank Father Neal Pfeifer for his pastoral care of Rose and our family.
