Obituary

The funeral for Roland R. Rasch, Wishek, ND will be Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the United Church of Christ at Wishek, ND. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 PM to 7:30 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, ND. Burial will be at the Wishek City Cemetery, Wishek ND.

Roland was born February 17, 1927 at Kulm, ND to Emanuel and Ida (Fey) Rasch. Roland followed in his father's footsteps and at age sixteen started working for the Soo Line Railroad. Duty called in 1944 and Roland was drafted into the Army. After training in Texas and Fort Dix, New Jersey, Roland was in the 42nd Infantry Division (Rainbow Division). He came home after World War II and resumed working for the Soo Line Railroad. Roland met Violette Brandenburger at a dance at Kulm, ND. They were married May 8, 1954 at Merricourt, ND. They moved frequently in their early years of marriage due to Roland's changing work assignments with the railroad. During these early years of marriage, they were also building a family with the birth of four children, Della Mae, Bernadine Rae, Lonnie Eugene and Laudie Lee. In 1969 Roland and family finally came to reside permanently in Wishek, ND. Roland was medically retired in 1981 after 38 years of service to the Soo Line Railroad. After retirement, he enjoyed teaching bowling to young children, going to high school sporting events with Emanuel Fercho and collecting hats and pens.

Roland died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at the Wishek Home for the Aged, Wishek, ND. He was 84years old.

Roland is survived by his wife, Violette, Wishek, ND; four children, Della (Dorian) Monson, Sawyer, ND; Bernadine (Chuck) Nord, Napoleon, ND; Lonnie (Begonia) Rasch, Springfield, VA; Laudie (Brenda) Rasch, Loveland, CO; 10 grandchildren, Chad Monson, Troy Monson, Jeremy Nord, Chris Nord, Zach Rasch, Chris Miller, Nicole Nord, Brittnie Rasch, Cassie Rasch and Lara Rhyner; one great-granddaughter, Joie Rasch; one brother, Otto (Annette) Rasch, Ashley, ND; one brother-in-law, Alex Steinwand, Ellendale, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Shawn, two sisters, Erna Steinwand and Alice Rasch, two infant brothers, Albert and Leonard.
