Richard Herr, 90, of Wishek, passed away Monday, December 23, 2019 at the Wishek Hospital. Military Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 PM, on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Wishek City Cemetery.  Richard requested no formal funeral or graveside ceremony. The Wishek American Legion Honor Guard will be present, to express the Nations gratitude for Richard's military service.

Richard Emil Herr was born on October 31, 1929 in Wishek, North Dakota, the son of Emil Herr and Katherine Baum. Richard attended schools in Wishek, graduating from Wishek High School in 1947. He attended the University of North Dakota, graduating in 1952.

From 1952 to 1954, Richard served in the United States Army, spending most of his time with a Military Intelligence Unit in Germany.

Richard entered Harvard Law School in the fall of 1954 and graduated in June of 1957. He then spent two years working in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Chicago, Illinois and spent three years in private practice as an attorney in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1962, Richard opened his law office in Wishek, and practiced law there until well into his 80's. He served as the Wishek City Attorney from 1966 until 2010, and also served as a McIntosh County Justice from 1969 to 1983.

Richard was a member of the Fred Kelle Post of the American Legion, and served as its adjutant and Athletic Officer. In 1995, Richard was inducted into the North Dakota American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame for his many years of tireless work promoting American Legion Baseball.

Richard was an avid golfer, and for several years was a member of the golf clubs in Ashley, Wishek, and Napoleon, all at the same time.

He is survived by one sister, Joan Roff, of Scottsdale, Arizona; one niece, Susan Becker (Daniel) of Goodyear, Arizona; and one nephew, Jim Roff (Pamela) of Bloomington, Minnesota.
