The funeral for Pius Schmidt will be Friday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church at Napoleon, ND.  Visitation will be Thursday, March 21 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at the church. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church.  Burial will be held at the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Kintyre, ND.

Pius Schmidt died at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck on March 16, 2019 from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.  He was 88 years old.

Pius Schmidt was born to Anton J. and Elizabeth (Feist) Schmidt on December 11, 1930, on a farm in Napoleon, ND, where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Kintyre. He graduated from eighth grade at Weigel School District #3.  Pius married Veronica Jacob at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, ND, on October 6, 1952.

Together they made their home on Pius' parent's farm where they raised cattle and farmed until his illness caused them to move to Bismarck, ND in 2015.  Previously he worked at the Farmers Union Co-op in Napoleon for several years. Pius was also a land appraiser, worked at the ASCS Office in Napoleon, ND, served on the Board at the Farmers Union Elevator, was an active member of the Napoleon Knights of Columbus as well as St. Boniface Catholic Church.  The St. Boniface community was very dear to Pius' heart.

Pius was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle.  He was a friend to many because he left an impression on whoever he met. His hobbies included telling jokes, singing, dancing, playing cards and playing softball. Though his illness took his memory, Pius' personality remained with him.  The many wonderful people who cared for him loved him dearly.

He is survived by his children, Don (Claudette) Schmidt, Bismarck, ND, David (Sandy) Schmidt Bismarck, ND, Marie (Pat) Magrum, Casper, WY, Marlene (Perry) Schumacher, West Fargo, ND and Danny Schmidt, Napoleon, ND; eleven grandchildren Jamie (Kristi Du-Rain Anderson), Jason (Erica) Schmidt, Heather Schmidt Johnson (Shad Prellwitz), Ryan Schmidt, Joseph (Karla) Schmidt, April (Ken) Dahme, Jonathan Schmidt, Christopher (Keeli) Magrum, Aftann (Roman) Taijeron, Justin (Aimee) Schumacher, Kylie Schumacher; twenty-two great grandchildren (one on the way); one sister, Theresia Silbernagel, Napoleon, ND; and one brother, Leo (Idora), Hazelton, ND; five sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Veronica; his parents, Anton and Elizabeth; four brothers, John, Peter, Ray, Valentine and two sisters, Frances and Julia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Maple View Memory Care, Bismarck, ND and St. Boniface Cemetery.
