The funeral service for Peter "Pete" Reis of rural Kintyre will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, ND. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the church starting at 9:00 AM. Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 14 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. There will be a rosary service held at 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 12 at St. Boniface Cemetery, SW of Napoleon.  A live stream of Peter's Funeral Service will be available on the St. Philip Neri Facebook and YouTube pages.

Pete was born on March 5, 1929, to Pius and Julianna (Schmidt) Reis, at their home farm in Logan County.  He was the fifth of 12 children.  While growing up, Pete helped with the many chores of farm life and attended country grade school southwest of Napoleon.  He and his family were devout Catholics and members of St. Boniface Parish southwest of Napoleon.

Pete enlisted in the United States Army October 1951.  He returned to Logan County on military leave and married Rose Leier on June 25, 1952.  He was soon deployed to Germany as part of the post-WWII reconstruction effort where he remained until his honorable discharge from active military service in 1953.  The Commanding Officer of Pete's 78 ^th Armored Field Artillery Battalion was so impressed with his work ethic that he uncharacteristically wrote a special commendation for Pete; "…officially commend you for your outstanding performance…your loyal and unselfish support in difficult problems with which we have been faced.  Your loss will be greatly felt by the Battery".  Pete took great pride in his military service.

When Pete returned from Germany, he and Rose settled on a family farm 9 miles southwest of Napoleon where they raised their son and daughter.  Pete was a devoted and hard-working husband and father.  He tended to the fields, the livestock and the numerous farm chores while Rose managed the household.   He found time for his community and was instrumental in working with his neighbors to get a farm-to-market road built in Logan County.  He also served as a trustee, board and council member for St. Boniface Parish, and later become a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.  He was a devoted son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle to his large extended family.  Through commitment to each other and their hard work ethic, Pete and Rose built a beautiful farm in which they took great pride.

Pete passed away peacefully on August 9th at the Napoleon Care Center; he was 91 years old.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Rose (Leier) in 2019; his son, Robert Reis, parents, Pius and Juliana Reis; brothers, Sebastian Reis and Pius Reis, Jr.; sisters, Eva (Tony) Huber, Clara Schweitzer, Madge Leier, Theresa (Jack) Dutt, Helen (Pete) Wickenheiser, Caroline (Karl) Schatz; sister-in-law, Margaret (Steve) Meier; and brothers-in-law, Andrew Leier and Joe C. Leier.

Peter is survived by a daughter, Brenda Reis Frasch (Clifford), Philadelphia, PA; a daughter-in-law, Sharon (Bob) Reis, Grand Forks, ND; two grandsons, Robert L. Reis II (Henry Hawley) and Travis J. Reis (Grace Kim), Minneapolis, MN; a great grandson, Landon V. Reis, Minneapolis; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Victor Wald, Napoleon, Alvera and Tony Leier, Kintyre, Angeline and Ed Geiger, Bismarck; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Lorraine (Sebastian) Reis, Napoleon, John Schweitzer, Harvey, Jill Brown, Las Vegas, NV, Barbara Leier, Braddock, ND, Al Leier, Linton; Chris and Viola Leier, Linton; Carl & Jolene Leier, Columbus, OH; as well as many nieces and nephews.

We thank the many people of this community who always found time to visit Peter during his time at the Napoleon Care Center, and a special thank you to the Napoleon Care Center staff for their many years of exceptional and compassionate care-giving.  We also thank Father Neal Pfeifer for his pastoral care of Peter and our family.  Peter will join his wife, Rose, and be interred at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery in Mandan.
