The funeral for Milton O. Wiest, Wishek, ND and West Fargo, ND will be Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the United Church of Christ Church at Wishek, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Wishek, ND.. Burial will be at the Wishek City Cemetery, Wishek, ND.

Milton Oscar Wiest was born July 9, 1930 son to Ed K. and Lydia (Weisser) Wiest on the family farm SW of Wishek, ND. He completed school through the eighth grade, at which time he was required, as the youngest son, to stay home and assist his parents with farming. As an adult, he joined the ND Army National Guard. He was deployed stateside to assist with reopening Ft. Rucker, Alabama, during the Korean Conflict. It was while in Alabama that he met the love of his life, Mildred Fennell, and they married on March 25, 1952 upon his discharge. Milton and Mildred moved back to North Dakota where they farmed for a year. After deciding that farming was not for them, they moved to Fargo where Milton attended Hanson's Mechanical School. Upon completion of school, they moved back to Wishek where Milton continued to do mechanical work, including part ownership of the Case Tractor dealership; and afterwards working at the Ford Garage. He then ventured into truck driving, and owned Wiest Trucking for several years. In 1972, Milton was appointed McIntosh County Sheriff, to complete the term. He went on to get his GED and took numerous law enforcement classes and real life training in places like Los Angeles, which included dealing with gangs and drugs. He was elected Sheriff in the next race, and the citizens of McIntosh County continued to elect him for many years. Even in the difficult times, he loved the call to duty and he felt very responsible for the citizens of McIntosh County. He retired in December 1994 after working extremely hard for his paychecks, from which he saved for his own retirement. He was so honored to be awarded the Lone Eagle Award, a prestigious award honoring law enforcement. Milton served as the Wishek Mayor from 1994 to 1998. He served on the city council in earlier years. In retirement, Milton and Mildred spent winters in Alabama. Mildred passed away August 19, 2007. He enjoyed time with his many friends, loved to golf and play pinochle, and he was an excellent carpenter. He was a Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings fan. Milton was active on both the Tri-County Fair Board and the Wishek Fire Department for many years. He served on the UCC Church council and the rural cemetery board. He was a member of the Fred Kelly American Logion Post, the Drum & Bugle Corp., the Wishek Antique Car Club, the Lloyd Rigler Golf Course, the ND and National Sheriff's and Deputy's Association and the North Dakota Peace Officers.  As memory issues set in, Milton spent the last couple of years under the awesome care of the Wishek Living Center; and most recently Kind-er Care Assisting Living in West Fargo, where he was closer to family.

Milton died Saturday July 9, 2016 at Sanford Health at Fargo, ND. He was 86 years old.

Milton is survived by his son, Glenn Wiest, Wilton, ND; daughters, Glenda (Vern) Stern, Osburn, ID; and Tamara (Gary) Tandsater, Argusville, ND; granddaughter, Desiree Stern (Tyler Williams), Pinehurst, ID; grandsons, John Tandsater, Fargo, ND; and Logan Tandsater, Argusville, ND; step grandchildren, Jeremy, Jessica and Michael Dietz and families all of Bismarck, ND; sisters-in-law, Florence Wiest, Wishek ND; Sybil Phillips and Annette Fennell, Dothan, AL; brother-in-law Jimmy (Sarah) Fennell, Avon, AL; foster sister, May (Clarence) Rieger, Bismarck, ND; several nieces and nephews; his many good friends and neighbors. Milton was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brother Ray and adopted sister, Loretta Fry. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ, Wishek, the Lloyd Reigler Golf Course, the Golf Club house, the Alzheimer's Association; or to any charity of donor's choice.
