Obituary

The funeral for Mabel Usina, Kulm, ND will be Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church at Kulm, ND. Visitation will be Friday, June 13, 2014, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Dahlstrom Funeral Home at Kulm. Interment will be in Pomona Valley Cemetery.

Mabel Steen the daughter of Ludvig (L.H.) and Laura (Larson) Steen, was born March 13, 1918, in Kulm, ND, and was baptized and confirmed at the Pomona Valley Lutheran Church. She grew up on the family farm, slightly northwest of Kulm which was homesteaded by her grandparents, Bernt and Maren Larson. Mabel attended Norden Township country school and graduated from Kulm High School in 1936. She moved to Minneapolis and attended Minneapolis School of Business, graduating in 1937, and then became employed in the bookkeeping department for the Board of American Missions of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Later, she moved to Chicago and worked at the Lutheran Church in America offices. In 1963 Mabel was united in marriage to Compton "Bud" Usina. After their marriage, the couple returned to Kulm to live on the family farm. Upon her return to Kulm, Mabel operated a gift shop in conjunction with her husband's insurance adjusting company. Her husband passed away in 1975. During this time, she also served as Kulm's city auditor. In the early 80s, Mabel and her sister, Dena, built a home in Kulm, where she resided until entering Manor St. Joseph's in Edgeley. She enjoyed a love of music throughout her life and maintained strong ties to family, church and her Norwegian heritage. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Mabel P. (Steen) Usina passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Wishek Living Center in Wishek, ND. She was 96 years old.

Mabel is survived by three nieces, Clarice Franke, Marilyn Hagen and Grace Nordahl, all of Wisconsin; cousins: Cleo Berntson, Glyndon, MN; Lowell (Carol) Berntson, Sarah, Kirsten, April and Maren, all of Kulm; Neal (Marla) Berntson, Deann, Kara and Cole, all of Kulm; special friend, Phyllis Berntson of Kulm; goddaughter, Doreen Kloehn of Minneapolis. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Ludvig and Laura; her husband, Compton; her sister, Dena (Fred) Alwin; and her cousin, Aileen (Clifford) Dok Hanson.
