Obituary

Luella Ackerman, 101, of Wishek, ND, passed away May 19, 2025, at the Wishek Living Center. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 2:00 pm at Faith Community Church, Wishek. Visitation will start at 12:30 pm on Saturday at the church. Burial will take place at the Wishek City Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed through Feist Funeral Home website.

Luella Vandina was born October 7, 1923, to Edmond and Lydia (Heupel) Ulmer on a farm southeast of Wishek near Green Lake. She was the second oldest, growing up in a family of nine children. Luella grew up during the Great Depression era and attended country school until the eighth grade. Following her schooling she farmed with her brothers and worked for various families, helping with cooking, cleaning and childcare.

Luella married Albert Ackerman on October 28, 1954, in Wishek, ND. After they married they made their home on the Ackerman family farm northwest of Wishek where they raised their five children: Alice, Ruby, Daniel, Paul, and Waldo. Albert and Luella farmed for many years eventually passing the farm down to their son Paul. They moved into the Wishek Assisted Living Center in 2011. Her husband Albert passed away September, 2020. Luella recently moved into the Wishek Living Center in March.

Luella was a member of Faith Community Church and served on the Martha Ladies Aid for many years. Luella enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. Some of her specialties were kuchen, dumplings, buns, borscht and chocolate cake with homemade hot fudge. In her later years, she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and reading. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Luella is survived by her children, Ruby Ackerman, Fargo and Waldo (Susan) Ackerman, Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Kenneth Ackerman, Amber (Kirk Jr.) Barron and Emma Ackerman; son-in-law, Jerry (Liz) Sand, Plattsmouth, NE. She is also survived by her sister, DeNora Hoff, Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Marline (Ora) Brintnall, Norma Ulmer and Mabel Ulmer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Albert, daughter Alice Sand, sons Daniel, Paul and stillborn son George, sisters Ellen Moon, Verna Bader and an infant baby girl, brothers Ruedow, Lloyd, Edgar, Elmo, Gordie and infant brother Robert, sisters-in-law Deloris Ulmer and Mercedes Ulmer, brothers-in-law Vance Moon, Raymond Bader and Arthur Hoff.
