Leroy
Wanner
Apr 14, 1944 — Feb 20, 2023
Wishek
LeRoy Loren Wanner, 78, slipped peacefully from this world with his family at his bedside on February 20, 2023 at St. Vincent's Care Center in Bismarck, ND after a well-lived life spent in Wishek, ND. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek. Burial will be held at St. Luke Cemetery.
LeRoy was born April 14, 1944 at Wishek, ND, the son of Adam and Lydia (Eiseman) Wanner. He attended Wishek Public School where he met the love of his life at the age of 13, Lorene Rueb, and could be seen walking across the playground with her at recess and after school, heads close and holding hands.
They were married August 13, 1961 and started their home in Wishek where he kept the streets of Wishek safe as a policeman and later provided many community and business services at Russ and Roy's Mobile Station, Martell Sales, as well as Mid Dakota Body Shop and Muffler Center.
LeRoy could marinate and grill a mean steak. He honed his culinary skills on the Wishek Fire Department at their annual picnic and expanded his cooking to various community events including the Annual Fireman's Supper as well as the Annual Sauerkraut Days Festival. He purchased the L&L Chuckwagon and took his show on the road, cooking at auction sales, fairs and racetracks with his devoted partner, Lorene, always at his side. From 1989 to 1999 he and Lorene filled many bellies with their beloved broasted chicken, pork chops and German smorgasbord while operating the L & L Restaurant. LeRoy coined the phrase "If the Colonel had my recipe, he would have been a General". They continued to prepare meals for friends and family as well as for the Wishek Senior Center.
LeRoy was a member and previous deacon at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek. He participated in Jaycees, the Wishek Fire Department and the Wishek Association of Commerce. He was famously known for his early car racing skills as well as his more recent golf cart driving skills. He proudly shared his coveted vegetable garden bounty with his Wishek Living Center neighbors. He excelled at the art of storytelling and could entertain his coffee clutch group and grandchildren equally well with his tales of classic cars and school boy antics. He was quick to turn a frown into a smile with his infectious humor. And he greatly appreciated all the assistance available in his small community, rewarding many with root beer barrels, peppermint life savers and honey cookies.
LeRoy is now reunited in heaven with his beloved wife Lorene, brother Marvin and parents. He will be remembered as the brightest star shining in the sky by those who love him. He was extremely proud to be a father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He leaves behind his four sons; Russell Wanner, Souix Falls, SD; Michael Wanner, Fargo, ND; Patrick Wanner, Bismarck, ND; Lance Wanner, Fargo, ND and two daughters, Pamela (Fredie) Aipperspach, Mesa, AZ; Penelope (Jesse) Welk, Bismarck, ND; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, and one sister, Eileen Deyle, Wishek, ND.
