Leone Mavis Hagen, 88 of Kulm, ND, passed away on February 12, 2020 at Ave Maria Village, in Jamestown, ND. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Kulm, ND on Saturday, February 22nd at 5:00 pm, followed by dinner & fellowship.  A second service will be held at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, ND on Sunday, February 23rd, following the regular Sunday Service.  Lunch & fellowship will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the funeral service at approximately 12:00 pm.

Leone was born on September 19, 1931 to Robert Cornelius and Anna Sophia (Johnson) Thompson in rural Mercer County, ND.  She grew up on a farm near Stanton and graduated from Stanton High School in 1948.

Following high school, she started teaching at a country school at the age of 16 and continued to teach for 16 years, stopping only to start her family.  She obtained her teaching degree from Dickinson State College.  She taught school in rural Mercer County, Stanton, and Bismarck, ND.

On June 3, 1961, Leone married John Martin Hagen in Bismarck, ND.  They had three children Harold Mark, Julie Ann, and Jennifer Joy.  After marrying they took over the family farm in Painted Woods Township, Burleigh County, ND.  In addition to raising their family, John and Leone farmed for 33 years, raising cattle and small grain crops until 1994.

John and Leone moved from the farm to Barnesville, MN in December 2010 and relocated again to Kulm, ND in September 2015, both times to be near Harold and his family.

Leone was very active in her churches.  She served as Sunday School Superintendent and taught Sunday School for over 25 years at Sunne Lutheran Church.  She also taught Vacation Bible School, served as church financial secretary, church board member, alter guild, officer in Lutheran Church Women, and was a faithful quilter.

She also taught 4-H classes, Farmers Union youth education classes, and substitute taught at Wilton Public School.  She served on the Wilton PTO Board and took an active part in Wilton, Barnesville, and Kulm Senior Citizens.  She faithfully attended Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, ND; Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Barnesville, MN; and Zion Lutheran Church, Kulm, ND.

Leone and John were avid sports fans.  She played high school basketball and especially enjoyed following the sporting activities of her children and grandchildren.  Many can recall seeing her at nearly every home game, even after her kids had graduated from high school.  She mainly served to calm John when he became upset with the errors of the officials.

Leone was a wonderful homemaker, seamstress, cook, and baker.  But she really excelled at teaching children and spending time with her family.  She loved taking care of her kids, especially the grandchildren and seeing her young great-grandchildren grow and develop.  She and John travelled often to visit them and had many family vacations and reunions.  She also enjoyed gardening, bird watching, reading, jigsaw puzzles, and completing the daily crossword puzzle.

Leone was a cancer survivor.  She fought breast cancer in her mid 40's and thyroid cancer in her late 60's.  But she could not completely beat it, as she died fighting a recent reoccurrence of breast cancer that had spread to her bones.  We are so fortunate that God helped her enjoy many years, despite the dreaded disease.

Leone is survived by son Harold (Karen) Hagen of Kulm, ND; daughter Julie (Brian) Fretag of Stow, OH; daughter Jennifer (Tyler) Weber of Kalispell, MT; grandchildren Jordan (Jodi) Koll, John (Kelsey Teubner) Hagen, Phillip Hagen, Zachary Fretag, Ethan Fretag, Jackson Weber, Abigail Weber, and Maxwell Weber, great-grandchildren Emma Koll, Gunner Koll, and Harrison Hagen; sisters Delores Berger, Stanton, ND and Roberta Schmidt, Sumner, WA; sister-in-law Gwen Thompson, Craig, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hagen; parents, Robert & Anna Thompson; parents-in-law, Harold & Dorothy Hagen; brother, Kenneth Thompson; sister-in-law, Louise Meidich; and brothers-in-law Michael Berger, George Schmidt, and Stanley Miedich.
