Leona Mabel Carlson was born to Carl and Gussie (Malm) Carlson in Swede township on September 5, 1922. She grew up on the family farm with her brother Leslie and sister Pauline and attended Swede school # 1. After graduating from Kulm High School in 1941, she received a 2 year teaching certificate and taught country school for two years. In 1944 she spent ten months working at the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver, Washington. After returning home she taught for two more years at Swede school #2. On July 12, 1946 Leona married Elmo Malm and they began farming the family farm in Swede township. One daughter, Marvel, was born to them. Leona was a member of the Kulm Assembly of God church where she served the Lord with joy. She saw a need for Christian training for young girls and started the Missionette program where she was the sponsor for nearly 15 years. She taught Sunday school for over 25 years and served as Sunday school superintendent where "Muffins for Mom" and Donuts for Dad" got their start. Leona loved music and was in the church choir and sang many solos with her sister Pauline. She was a great seamstress and used this talent to provide clothing for family and others. Leona made many baby blankets and quilts and did projects for church. She loved gardening and flowers, cooking, canning, drawing, writing and handcrafts. In 1984 Leona and Elmo retired from farming, moved to Kulm and enjoyed "town living". About fifteen years before her death, Leona began to struggle with Alzheimer's. She and Elmo stayed briefly at the Wishek Nursing Home and returned to their home where they lived until 2007 when they entered the Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale, ND. Elmo passed away that same year. Her last ministry was that of providing a place of peace for those who came to sit at her bedside. Leona accepted Jesus as her Savior at age eight. She had the assurance that her last breath on earth would be her first breath in her heavenly home………………Finally Home!
