Leon Goebel, son of Carl and Marie (Zimmerman) Goebel, was born February 12, 1919 in Logan County.  He grew up on the family homestead northeast of Wishek and attended country school in the Arvada District (Logan County).  He married Ruth Becker in Napoleon on February 11, 1944.

Farming was his life's work growing crops and raising cattle.

Through the years, the family resided on or near the Goebel homestead located northeast of Wishek and on acreage near Lehr.  The family's home at the time northeast of Wishek was destroyed by fire in 1978.  The family then built a home and moved to Wishek, and Leon continued the cattle operation until their 1990 farm auction.

Leon and Ruth were married 67 years.  Following his wife's death, he lived independently until the age of 97, taking pride in maintaining his home and yard.

He wasn't one to enjoy idle hours.  Work was his primary activity, but he did like to listen to old-time German music.  He especially enjoyed old hymns sung by men's quartets, and could often by heard singing along.

He joined the membership of the Ebenezer Baptist Church/Ruff Preaching Station located northeast of Lehr in 1932, and was baptized in Clear Lake near Wishek.  When the Station was discontinued, his membership continued at the Lehr Ebenezer Baptist Church until its closing.

Leon passed away on July 12, 2019 at the Wishek Living Center in Wishek, North Dakota.  He was 100 years and 5 months of age.

His wife, sister and parents preceded him in death; Ruth in 2011, Viola in 2009, Marie in 1982 and Carl in 1970.

Leon is survived by his son Clark (Kay) of Fargo, daughter Claudia (Larry) of Custer, South Dakota and son Cameron (Sondra) of Mandan.  Five grandchildren Collin, Lori, William (Bill), Canyon and Willow, three step-grandchildren Barry, Vicky and Ryker, two great-grandchildren Madison and Tori, great-great grandchild Eli, and Brothers-in-law Wallace (Lenore) and Roger (Betty).

His request was for a family service.
