Leo was born in Strasburg, North Dakota on June 12, 1920 to Caspar and Josephne (Baumgartner) Unser. Leo was one of 14 children and attended farm school up until the sixth grade after which he was needed to help on the farm. He was drafted into WWII in 1942 and served in the Army branch of the military. Leo never received any furlough while he was deployed and was finally discharged in August 1945. While in the Army, Leo saved many lives serving as a First Scout and later becoming a Staff Sergeant in the South Pacific. He married Kenegunda Baumstarck on June 10 th , 1946 and they adopted five children living on the farm north of Napoleon, ND. Leo was the epitome of hard work and honesty. His word was stronger than a contract and he trusted that others had the same values. Being a dad was never easy but he did the best he knew how. Leo could never sit still, having numerous hobbies which included planting a garden, macramé, refurbishing old player pianos and stereo turn tables, collecting coins, playing pinochle, square dancing, and above all going to church and praying. Not only did Leo have many hobbies, he belonged to numerous clubs such as the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. Leo was a staunch advocate for the American Veteran always asking that the church pray for them. He also believed in setting people straight if they meandered off the righteous path. Keeping healthy was his goal and often referred family and friends to herbal remedies and reflexology for curing illnesses. Leo carried the torch for a long time out living his parents, all of his brothers, sisters, and their spouses.
Leo Unser passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the Serenity House for Hospice care in Phoenix, AZ due to complications associated with a subarachnoid hemorrhage where he was surrounded by many loved ones. He was 96 years old.
