Obituary

The funeral for Leo Piatz, Napoleon, ND will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be held Monday, November 12, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Napoleon, ND.  Burial will be at St. Philip Neri Catholic Cemetery in Napoleon, ND.

Leo, son of Frank and Rosina (Kuntz) Piatz, was born February 1, 1935 in Logan County, ND.  He grew up and attended rural school southwest of Napoleon, ND.  Leo graduated from Napoleon High School in 1954 and continued his schooling at Ellendale Industrial School for three summers.  Leo was united in marriage to Marion Kuntz on June 3, 1957 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Napoleon, ND.  Leo was a loving husband to Marion for over 61 years.

Leo started his career by teaching country school southwest of Napoleon, ND.  He then did carpenter work for Peter and Barbara Kuntz (his father and mother-in-law). Soon after, Leo started doing part time work for the Napoleon Country Club and various area farmers. In 1960, he started working at the Farmers Union Elevator. In 1968 he became manager for which he did for 27 years. Leo retired from managing the Farmers Union Elevator in 1995. After his retirement he drove for the Napoleon Care Center and South-Central Transit. Leo also did interim managing at 6 different elevators.

Leo was chosen as Napoleon High School Alumni of the Year in 2005.  He was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Napoleon Volunteer Fire Department, Park Board, Golden Aged Club and served as their president.

Leo was quiet and calm natured. He was smooth on the dance floor and beamed a beautiful smile. Leo was hardworking. When he was not at work, he and Marion usually had a project going on at home. Family and faith were the center of Leo and Marion's life together. Leo loved all types of sports and together, Leo & Marion traveled many miles to see their children and grandchildren's activities. Leo was a man of strong catholic faith. His faith gave him comfort and strength.

Leo died Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Napoleon Care Center, Napoleon, ND surrounded by his family. He was 83 years old.

Leo is survived by his wife Marion, Napoleon, ND; five sons, Robert (Jacinta) Piatz, Jamestown, ND, Jeffrey (Kristi) Piatz, Prior Lake MN, Perry (Sandi) Piatz, Oxbow, ND, Randy (Pam) Piatz, Bismarck, ND, Shane (Catlin) Piatz, Fargo, ND; four daughters, Connie (James) Harty, Jamestown, ND, Pamela (Clem) Gross, Napoleon, ND, Tamara (Steve) Braunberger, Jamestown, ND, Michele (James) Kessler, Bismarck, ND; twenty two grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willie (Alvina) Piatz, Napoleon, ND, Peter Piatz, Napoleon, ND; five sisters Ida (Leo) Kuhn, Lodi, CA, Mathilda Bitz, Apple Valley, MN, Delrose Schmitt, Napoleon, ND, Sally (John) Johs, Napoleon, ND, Alice Schumacher, Bismarck, ND.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rosina Piatz. His sister Frances Becker. His brother in laws Fred Bitz, Tom Schumacher, and Bill Schmitt.
