Obituary

The funeral service for LaVerne Lehr, Wishek, ND, will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, ND. Visitation will be held Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, ND. Burial will be at St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery, Wishek, ND.
LaVerne Virginia (Schnabel) Lehr was born June 5, 1925, to Daniel and Grace Mae (Farnam) Schnabel, Jr. on the family farm near Burnstad, ND. She was baptized in the rural Jehovah Evangelical Church and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, ND. LaVerne attended the local country school and graduated from Wishek High School in 1943. She attended summer sessions at Ellendale Normal and Industrial College receiving her teaching certificate. She taught nine years in Logan County rural schools. LaVerne married Lawrence Lehr on June 1, 1947, at the Burnstad Lutheran Church. They lived in the area until 1954, when they purchased a farm east of Napoleon, ND where they raised livestock, grain, and had a dairy herd. In 1962, they purchased a farm southeast of Wishek, where they lived until 1996 when they moved into Wishek. LaVerne worked part-time at the Wishek Farmers Union Elevator and did substitute teaching in the Wishek Public School. In 1967, she was employed as bookkeeper for the Wishek Farmers Union Oil Company, a position she held for 22 years, retiring in 1989. Lawrence passed away on April 9, 2013. LaVerne enjoyed baking, volunteering, doing crossword and jig saw puzzles, playing Scrabble, reading, embroidery, and quilting. LaVerne was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. She served a term as President of the Wishek Hospital Auxiliary, and President and Secretary of the WELCA organization. She was a member of the Goodwill Ambassadors at the Wishek Living Center, the quilting group at church, and taught Sunday School. LaVerne entered the Wishek Living Center on February 1, 2018.
LaVerne died February 19, 2018 at the Wishek Living Center, Wishek, ND. She was 92 years old.
LaVerne is survived by her daughter, Constance Nies, Bismarck, ND; two sons, Jerome (Vernell) Lehr, Wishek, ND; Jeffrey Lehr, Huron, SD; four grandchildren, Christopher, Sheila, Dawn, and Brent; eight great-grandchildren, Samuel, Anna, Elyse, Olivia, Lilyenne, Logan, Andrew, and Sierra; three great-great grandchildren, Greyson, Silas, and Izzy; five sisters, Mary Lehr, Truman, MN; Dena Stoller, Sun City, AZ; JoAnne Wentz, Napoleon, ND; Betty Himmerich, Stark City, MO, and Rebecca (James) Zahradka, Purdy, MO; two brothers, Walter Schnabel, Napoleon, ND; and Charles (Nancy) Schnabel, Ashley, ND; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence of 66 years, her parents, and infant brother, David; sister, Edna Roth; five brothers-in-law, Orvin Roth, Warren Wentz, Clarence Himmerich, Elmer Lehr, and Elmer Stoller; and one sister-in-law, Katie Schnabel.
