It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Julia Horner, 91, of Napoleon, ND, on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Sanford Hospice House, Fargo ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 28, 2020 at 1:30 PM at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Napoleon. Due to Covid-19 and limited attendance a Livestream of Julia's Funeral Service will be available on the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church Facebook Page or St. Philip Neri Napoleon YouTube Page.

Julia was born July 12, 1929 to Magdalena (Schumacher) and Jacob Piatz in Napoleon.  She went to school in Napoleon and after graduation, Julia attended Valley City State Teachers College and taught country school. She married John P. Horner on October 19, 1948 and they shared 58 wonderful years together.  They lived initially in Burnstad, ND until moving to the Horner family farm where they farmed for 49 years. They moved to Napoleon in 2003.  After John died in 2007, Julia remained in her house until residing in the Napoleon Care Center in 2018.

Julia spent her time gardening, canning and making chokecherry jelly. No one could replicate her coleslaw.   She taught her daughters to sew, cook and bake.  Her recipes live on through her children, grandchildren and nieces.  She was a member of the Homemakers Club, the Altar Society, Christian Mothers, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Julia enjoyed baking and was honored to pass on her traditions by making wedding kuchen for her grandchildren's weddings.  She loved to play cards, especially Pinochle and May I but also found joy in a rousing game of 5 Crowns with her children and grandchildren.  She loved visiting with friends and family and made special efforts to serve individual treats, especially her grandchildren's favorite cookies.  Julia loved sports and never missed a Minnesota Twins game.

Julia is survived by her children, Sandy (Pat) Feist, Morris, MN, Ron (Leanne) Horner, Bismarck, ND, JoAnn (Mike) Ross, Williston, ND, John (Trecie) Horner, Woodbury, MN, Susan (Jack) Gunsch, Bismarck, ND, Julie (Jim) Somsky, Rosemount, MN and David (Anita) Horner, Fargo ND; 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; sisters, Irene Horner and Rose Horner, Napoleon, ND; and  brothers, Willie J. Piatz and Andy (Lorraine) Piatz, Napoleon, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Magdalena Piatz; husband John; brothers, Mike and Anton; sisters Mary, Maggie, Caroline and Tillie.

In lieu of memorials, the family ask that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
