Janice H. King, 83, of Kulm, ND, went to sing with the angels on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at Edgewood Dominion Assisted Living in Bismarck, ND.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Kulm, ND.  Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Kulm.

Janice H. (Michaelis) King was born in Ellendale, ND to John and Hilda Michaelis.   She had one brother, Melvin.  Living on a farm, Janice attended rural school through eighth grade and then the family moved to Ellendale where she graduated from Ellendale High School.  While working at the Ellendale Drive-In after graduation, Janice met Larry King when he and fellow baseball players would stop in for a bite to eat after their games.  Janice married Larry King on July 31, 1960 and moved to Larry's family farm, near Merricourt, ND where they farmed and raised livestock.  Together they had three children, Kelly, Todd and Wade.

During their life on the farm, the family house burned down on November 30th, 1971.  With the help of family, friends and the community, they soon had a roof over their heads and everything they needed. In June 1972 they were able to move into their new home on the farm and life continued as usual.

Some of Janice's "usual" included caring for her family, cooking delicious meals and baking yummy desserts.  Another one of Janice's true loves was tending her garden, designing flowerbeds and caring for all the flowers she loved to plant.  She dedicated a lot of her time to canning and preserving vegetables from her garden, which resulted in her family's favorite dill pickles.   She also was quick to clip articles and pictures from various media sources, archiving her childrens' accomplishments. You can be sure you'd find clippings of noteworthy events, special notices and articles relating to family and friends in her scrapbooks!  She enjoyed the family housecats and was amused by the arms full of pet bunnies we kids brought in-doors and tolerated the many chilled baby calves hauled into the house to be warmed up.

Janice spent many hours at the sewing machine, a talent beginning in high school, when she won a "Sew it with Wool" contest by entering a beautiful green wool suit she made.  An accomplished seamstress, Janice sewed clothes, could mend anything, and sewed or altered many a prom dress. Janice sewed many, many beautiful quilts for family and friends, as well as being a proud member of ladies quilting group at Zion Lutheran Church.  She was crafty and could look at something and then put together a pattern and make it!  She also loved spending time with friends and family, attending Birthday Club, Homemakers Club, Ladies Church Circle and working whenever needed for church meals and events. Janice also served as Secretary for the Zion Lutheran Church Board for many years.

When tough times hit the farming community, Janice went to work at the Fargo Assembly Plant in Edgeley in 1996, where she worked for many years alongside old friends and made many new friends along the way.

She loved her family, people, animals, and was a kind soul to one and all.    Larry and Janice were married for 57 years before Larry passed away in 2018.  Janice then moved the family's farm home to Kulm, spending happy times with friends in Kulm before moving to an Assisted Living facility in Bismarck as a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease was making it difficult to live safely alone at home.
Surviving Janice are a daughter Kelly (Wayne) Olson Mandan, ND, and sons Todd (Marcia) Linton, ND and Wade (Monica), McKenzie, ND, four grandchildren, Jenna (Jerrold) Zettel, Erika (Scott) Weninger, Ashlyn King and Trace King, and two great grandchildren Claire and James Zettel.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents John and Hilda Michaelis, her brother Melvin Michaelis and her husband Larry.

In lieu of flowers memorial can be given to the Kedish House in Ellendale, ND, the Kulm Fire Department or the Kulm Ambulance Service.
