Herbert Buerkley was born on October 19, 1923 to Fred and Christine (Burkle) Buerkley at Fredonia, ND. He attended rural schools until 8th grade and worked for local farmers in the Kulm area. Herbert spent time building telephone and electricity lines in Beulah, Fredonia, Kulm, Oakes and Jamestown, ND, as well as Webster, SD. Herbert married Alice Woehl on November 11, 1951 at the Berlin Baptist Church, rural Fredonia, ND. He immediately began his farming career by moving to a farm south of Kulm, ND. A year later, in 1952, Herbert became a member of the Berlin Baptist Church serving as a Christian Baptist Youth Leader, Sunday Superintendent and Deacon. In 2011 when the Berlin Baptist Church closed, he and Alice became members of the Kulm Baptist Church. In addition to his farming and church service, Herbert's retirement from farming allowed him to stay active by purchasing and operating B and B wrecking of Kulm, ND. Herbert's passions in life included his deep love for his wife, family and friends. Farming and raising animals brought great joy to him as he spent 33 years making a living off the land in the Kulm and Fredonia area. His main hobby was fishing and he created excellent memories catching fish with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But his greatest desire was to serve the Lord through reading the Bible, praying and setting an example for others on how to love the Lord. Today, he is pain free, full of joy and rejoicing with our Lord and Savior in Heaven.
Herbert died Saturday, February 15 at the Wishek Living Center, Wishek, ND. He was 90 years old.
