Helen was born April 24, 1920 on the family farm northwest of Lehr, ND, the daughter of Jacob and Katherina (Weisenburger) Weixel. Helen grew up on the family farm and received her elementary education in rural Logan county schools. Helen often talked of the old country school where families would gather together for their parties, pie and basket socials. She continued living at home until her marriage to Alvin Buchholz on November 26, 1939 at Lehr, ND. They made their home on the Buchholz Homestead 8 miles northeast of Lehr where they farmed. In 1963 Helen and Alvin moved to their farm 2 miles north of Lehr where they engaged in grain farming, milking cows, raising ducks, geese and chickens. Helen was involved with NYA sewing projects, cooking German dishes, baking, of which she generously shared honey cookies, chocolates and angel food cakes with family and friends. She enjoyed board games, reading, gardening and flowers. History and geography were of special interest to her. Helen was a member of Zion United Methodist Church at Lehr, ND and a member of the United Methodist Women's Organization. She enjoyed helping out in the kitchen for church functions.
