The funeral for Harriet D. Blomquist, Kulm, North Dakota will be held Friday, June 27, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Kulm, ND. Burial will be at the Swede Township Cemetery, Kulm, ND.
Harriet Ogren, daughter of John and Tilda (Malm) Ogren was born September 5, 1917 at Kulm, ND. Harriet was a graduate of Edgeley High School and received her teaching certificate from Valley City Teachers College, following which she taught for several years in Swede Township. Harriet married Erland August Blomquist on November 28, 1943. They lived on a farm north of Kulm until retirement, when the couple moved to North Carolina. In later years she returned to North Dakota, living several years in the Manor at Edgeley, ND. As health declined, she moved to St. Rose Care Center at LaMoure, ND. Harriet was an inspiration to those around her in many ways. An advocate of children's rights, she expressed by her actions and words her belief that children are individuals deserving of respect. She believed in women's rights and was much ahead of her time, as many of these tenets are ones we all hold dear in this time. Education and learning were lifelong pursuits for her, and she took piano lessons well into her 60s. Knowing the names of native plants and birds was important to her, and she loved the emergence of the spring crocus and the first chirp of a bird on the melting snow. It was important to make each day fun and creatively entertaining, and she passed this along to her students and daughter. Encouragement and tolerance were her namesakes. Consistent love and a gentle spirit carried her through life. She didn't complain, rather looked to a better day. These were the lessons she translated to those around her. A life well lived, with grace and good will. She is remembered and missed by family, friends, and community.
Harriet passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the St. Rose Care Center at LaMoure, ND. She was 96 years old.
Harriet is survived by her daughter, Glenna Blomquist, St. Petersburg, Florida. She was preceded in death by her eleven siblings and an infant twin sister. Memorials will be given to Hospice or Swede Township Cemetery. Share memories and sign online guestbook at www.dahlstromfuneralservice.com.
