The funeral for Edgar Ulmer, Ashley, ND will be Friday, February 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Ashley Baptist Church, Ashley, ND. Visitation will be on Thursday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM, and at the Ashley Baptist Church, Ashley, ND from 4:00-7:00 PM. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM, Thursday, at the Ashley Baptist Church. Burial will be at the Wishek City Cemetery.

Edgar D. Ulmer son of Edmond and Lydia (Heupel) Ulmer was born on May 7, 1932 in rural McIntosh County, near Green Lake, southeast of Wishek, ND. He attended country school in rural McIntosh County, near Wishek, ND. Edgar served in the Army during the Korean War Era from 1954-1956. On December 14, 1958 he married Mercedes Meidinger in the Berlin Baptist Church, near Fredonia, ND. The couple lived a short time in Ellendale, ND and then moved on to their lifelong occupation of farming in McIntosh County. There were many years in which Edgar had to stick to his motto, "If I didn't have a job, I created one." Some of these endeavors included ranching, custom crop spraying, antique and machinery dealing, cattle leasing, trapping, fur buying, and owning Ashley Livestock Exchange for several years. Edgar enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, trapping, partaking in auction sales, traveling, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Edgar always said, "If I knew having grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first." Edgar was a wonderful man who will be greatly missed by friends and family. Edgar enjoyed visiting with people and was always willing to hand out his words of wisdom through his famous "Edgarisms".

Edgar died peacefully at his home after an eight year battle with cancer, on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. He was 78 years old.

The family would like to thank friends, family, and the community for the outpouring of support over the last several years as he fought his courageous battle with cancer. Thank you also to the Ashley VFW and Ashley American Legion, Frank Piper Post #53 for their military honors. He will be missed by many!

Edgar is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mercedes, two sons, Randy (Candice) Ulmer, Ashley, ND, Russel (Sandie) Ulmer, Mandan, ND, and one daughter, Renee (Layton) Becker, Bismarck, ND, six grandchildren, Jessica (Gary) Wurtz, Brent Ulmer, Josh Ulmer, Corey Ulmer, Brad Becker, and Jason Becker, and two great-granddaughters, Avery Wurtz and Breckyn Wurtz; one brother, Ruedow (Deloris) Ulmer, Ashley, ND, four sisters, Ellen Moon, Dilworth, MN, Luella (Albert) Ackerman, Wishek, ND, Verna Bader, Wishek, ND, DeNora Hoff, Bismarck, ND, three sisters-in-law, Marline Ulmer, Mandan, ND, Norma Ulmer, Lemmon, SD, and Mabel Ulmer, Mobridge, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Robert, Elmo, Gordie, and Lloyd.
