The funeral for Douglas W. Townsend will be Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Zoar Lutheran Church at LaMoure, ND at 11:00 AM.  Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church.  Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery, LaMoure, ND.

Douglas Winfield Townsend was born August 22, 1921 in LaMoure, ND to Earl and Mabel (Twete) Townsend.  He grew up and attended school in LaMoure and graduated in 1939.  Doug attended ND School of Science in Wahpeton for six months then transferred to Aircraft Assembly and Maintenance in 1941. He was offered the position of Chief Petty Officer as instructor at the Great Lakes Navy Base. He was transferred to UND at Grand Forks, ND. Doug was called to active duty in December of 1942. He was at Camp Crowder, MO, Kingston, RI and England. Doug was in the battle of Normandy, Battle of St. Lo and the Battle of the Bulge. Doug returned home in November of 1945 and joined the Goehl's Auto Supply as a salesman. Doug married Betty Rood, daughter of Oscar and Blanche Rood on July 26, 1948 at Aberdeen, SD. Doug worked at the automotive parts supply for 20 years and then took it over. Doug and Betty had the T&R Supply company in LaMoure for 12 years and then moved to Bismarck, ND where they worked for 10 years before moving back to LaMoure. Doug worked part time at the Hovland Vet Clinic in LaMoure until he retired at age 90. Doug's hobbies were hunting and baseball. He played amateur baseball and was inducted into the State Hall of Fame. He also played minor league professional baseball for the Fargo Moorhead Twins in the Northern League.  He was also invited to the St. Louis Cardinals Farm Team a class "A" baseball team.  Doug belonged to the American Legion Post 19 for 70 years, the V.F.W. Post # 1326 at Bismarck, James River Wildlife Club and the LaMoure Summer Theater.

Doug passed away Monday, August 5, 2019 at the Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes, ND.  He was 97 years old.

Doug is survived by his wife, Betty, LaMoure, ND, one son, Barry (Glenda) Townsend, LaMoure, ND; two daughters, Penny (Mark) Dahlstrom, Wishek, ND; Kris (Roger) Gentzkow, Bismarck, ND; eight grandchildren, Billi (Dave) Warcken, Brooke (Blane) Robert, Beau Townsend, Riley (Gina) Gentzkow, Elise (Cole) Lunzman, Kelsey (Blake) Hankey, Rhett Gentzkow, Reid Gentzkow; six great-grandchildren, Macy Robert, Maverick Robert, Marshall Robert, Dawson Warcken, Weston Gentzkow, Gracie Gentzkow, Lucas Hankey.  Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Mabel Townsend, one brother, Wallace Townsend.  Share memories and sign online guest book at www.dahlstromfuneralservice.com .  Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, ND entrusted with arrangements.
