Obituary

The life of Donald Edwin Zundel, 53, of Edgeley, ND will be commemorated at a Memorial Service Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Kulm, ND with Pastor James Rupe officiating.

Don, the youngest son of Edwin and Amy "Noonie" (Brome) Zundel, Edgeley, ND was born October 26, 1956 in Jamestown, ND. He lived most of his life on the family farm and attended school in Kulm. He lived in Denver, CO for a few months in 1982. In 1983 - 1987 he was married to Kathy Schwartz and farmed the family land. In 1985 Don received a certificate in Ag Equipment Maintenance from North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton and graduated with an AAS Degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning in 1989. To pursue that interest, he left the area and worked in Washington State, Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska before being drawn back to his roots in 1993 on the Zundel Family Organic Farm where he remained until his passing. Donald served as President of the local ND OCIA Chapter 3 for several years. He found pleasure each year in working the land, planting, checking and harvesting the crops while utilizing organic practices. He also raised stock cattle until earlier this year. Besides organic farming, Don enjoyed attending farm auctions, Expos, and organic farming conferences around the country. In the quieter moments, he enjoyed fishing, playing Scrabble, gardening, making pickles and bread, four-wheeling, watching sit com TV reruns and visiting with neighbors and friends. He generously shared his delicious pickles, for which he had earned a reputation. While enjoying the technology of today that makes life easier, Don held a deep belief in the simple way of life. He often pointed out the beautiful sunsets, harvest moons, or the maturing grains waving across the land, saying, "You just don't see this in the city."

Donald died Monday morning, October 11, 2010 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, SD from natural causes.

He is survived by his father Edwin, three brothers: Steve and Richard, both of Edgeley, ND and Loren (Sandy) of Forbes, ND, two nieces: Allexa Zundel, Edgeley, ND and Justina Zundel, Minneapolis, MN; three nephews: Keenan Zundel, West Fargo, ND Jason Zundel, Nova Scotia, Canada and Kyle Zundel, Forbes, ND and a special friend, Charlene Schrum, Eureka, SD. He was preceded in death by his mother in 2004. It was Donald's wishes to be cremated and his cremated remains will be scattered at the site he had chosen on the land he loved on the family farm.
