Baltzer "Bill" Schmitt was born February 28, 1944 in Logan County to Michael and Eva (Schwartzenberger) Schmitt. As a young man he worked for various local farmers, helped drill water wells with Clemens Gross and worked at the Super Valu in Linton for Pius Glass. Bill attended rural school in Napoleon. He entered the armed forces (National Guard) in 1962 for six months of active duty and was in the reserves until 1970 when he was honorably discharged. Bill married Delrose Piatz May 12, 1965 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. They moved to Ypsilanti, MI in 1965 where Bill worked for the Ford Motor Company. They lived there for 12 years, where all four of their children were born. In 1977 they moved to Napoleon where they have owned and operated Schmitt Locker until the present time. Bill was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church at Napoleon, ND. Bill was a member of the AMVETS, American Legion, Eagles, Pheasants Forever and the Moose Lodge. Family was a very important part of Bill's life. He was always so proud of his children and grandchildren. He appeared tough and strong on the outside but was a softy on the inside! He always cherished the times he could be camping and fishing with family and friends. Fall was Bill's favorite time of the year as he enjoyed hunting pheasants and shooting the big buck. He was well known for his sense of humor and was always ready with a one-liner joke! Bill was famous for making the best homemade sausage. He could also be found at the Downtowner playing a round of gin with his buddies.
