Alma Meidinger was born August 25, 1928 to Albert C and Emma (Schwindt) Meidinger. She was born in the family's sod house along Beaver Creek about 10 miles north of Zeeland. She grew up there until they moved to a better house a few miles away. This farm became known as the family homestead. She was raised at the farm along with her 6 sisters and 5 brothers. She attended country school through the 8th grade. On October 3, 1948 she married Walter Rath at New Kassel Reformed Church, rural Zeeland. They were blessed with three children – Carmen, Terry and Robin. Alma helped with much of the farm work, raised chickens and ducks, and milked cows for many years. They retired and moved into Wishek around 2000. Walter passed away February 6, 2012.
Alma and Walter were members of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, the Dakota Saddle Club and Eagles Club. They enjoyed square dancing and going to polka dances. Alma did a lot of sewing, cooked excellent meals, and in her later years she embroidered many dish towel sets. Christmas season was very important to Alma. She sewed Christmas dresses for Carmen and Robin when they were young, and she baked many kinds of cookies every year, including popcorn balls which Terry got to help her make, and delicious caramels. It was a treat for each family to get a box of her Christmas goodies. Alma moved into the Wishek Living Center on April 26, 2021.
Survivors include her children, Carmen Haegele, Terry (Marsha) Rath, Robin (Rich) Mjolsness; grandchildren Juynee (Jerod) David, Tennille (Andy) Brown, Chance (Tera) Haegele, Mindy (Dan) Graulty, Patrick (Karley) Rath; great grandchildren Jace and Tanner David; brother Ellon Meidinger; sisters Alvina (Herman) Sayler, Arlene (Melvin) Kaseman; sister-in-laws Delores Meidinger and Phyllis A Meidinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter; parents, sisters Gertrude Kaseman, Viola Raile, Luella Foerderer, Lorraine Kaseman, and brothers Wilbert, Marvin, Wilmer and Edgar.
A special thank you to the Wishek Living Center for the care Alma received while a resident there.
