It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Allen Hammond at the Wentz Living Center (WLC) early on the morning of January 2nd at the age of 82. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, January 7, 2025, at Feist Funeral Home, Napoleon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the spring at the Napoleon City Cemetery.

Allen was born on September 25, 1943, in Napoleon, ND. He was born on the ranch where he lived and worked until shortly before his move to the WLC. He grew up surrounded by the vast open spaces of the ranch, where the rhythm of daily life was dictated by caring for livestock, farming with the seasons, and making hay when the weather allowed. As a young boy, he was stricken by polio, but it didn't diminish his determination to become a successful rancher and farmer. He never willingly retired, but with declining health, he had no choice.

One love Allen had throughout his life was horses. From a young age, he developed a special bond with these majestic animals, understanding their spirit, strength, and subtle nuances in a way few could. Whether on trail rides, working cattle, or simply out riding, Allen felt at home on horseback.

A man with simple loves and creature comforts, he never sought to leave the ranch for long periods of time, and could be found at home in the evenings watching TV, reading newspapers, or calling friends and family for long conversations. He loved to drive to neighboring towns and to out-of-state sales barns for horse and bull sales, and to visit people. His smile was as big as his heart and made those around him laugh and smile back.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva Hammond; his brother, Herschel; and his sister, Mabel (Duane) Larson.

He is survived by his sisters, Shirley (Don) Wilcox, Lucille (Jim) Johnson, and Luella (Frank) Peterson, and his brothers, Glen and Robert.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in his name to the Napoleon Cemetery.
